Blackberry season is in full swing during the late summer, and during those times you can find these sweet, tender berries are on sale all over the place! When I lived in Georgia, I loved picking these fresh from the plant and snacking on them as I walked through the woods. While delicious when picked fresh from the wild, they are just as yummy when you grab them from your local farmers market or grocery store too! This simple stovetop blackberry apple puree is easy to make and something the entire family can enjoy.

For most of the year, you might need a cup of sugar to eat conventional blackberries. When harvested out of season, they can be tough, seedy, and sour! The time between the end of August and early September is the only true exception to this rule, and this recipe takes advantage of that.

Blackberry Apple Puree

 

Blackberries pack an impressive nutritional punch, with many health benefits. They are high in antioxidants and provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Full of fiber, they can aid in the digestive process and help improve gut health. Less commonly known benefits, blackberries are a wonderful source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K, benefiting both the immune system and promoting bone health.

 

“An apple a day keeps the Dr. away.” We’ve all heard it, but what makes apples so great? Loaded with Vitamin C, Soluble Fiber, and Flavanoid, eating apples can benefit and support processes throughout the body. They may not actually keep you from visiting the Dr., but you can’t ignore the nutritional benefits. Their natural sweetness makes a great addition to many baby food purees. This puree is suitable for ages 6mo+.

Blackberry and Apple Baby Food Puree

 

This Blackberry and Apple baby food is so quick and easy to make and you can store the finished puree in the fridge for 48 hours or in your freezer for up to 3 months. Simply peel and chop the apples, before adding to a saucepan with the fresh blackberries. Once combined, cover with a lid and allow to cook for about 30 minutes or until the apples have softened. After they have softened, mash the fruit together and continue to cook, uncovered for 15 more minutes. And that is it! Allow the puree to cool completely before putting it into Foodii pouches and storing it. If you prefer a more smooth puree you can blend in a food processor or blender before storage. Add a little bit of breastmilk or formula to thin if needed.

Ingredients

1 pint Fresh Blackberries

5 large Apples

1- Wash all produce. Peel and chop the apples into small pieces for quicker cooking.

2- Combine the berries and apple pieces in a sauce pan with a tight-fitting lid.

3- Boil the fruit for 30 minutes on medium with the lid on. Occasionally check and stir.

4- Once all fruit is soft, mash with a fork or potato masher and allow to cook on low for another 15 minutes with no lid.

5- Remove from heat and allow to cool before blending.

6- Once cooled, blend until smooth and simply transfer into your Kiinde Twist bags for easy feeding on the go!
